Zimbabwe today joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Families Day and the government has reiterated its commitment to uphold the importance of the family unit.
Family unit plays an important role in ensuring socio-economic development of any country and as the country joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Families Day this Tuesday, government says it is working on a number of programmes and initiatives to ensure peace and harmony as mandated in the constitution.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Cde Sithembiso Nyoni said they are aware of challenges that affect many families including poverty and an increase in divorces which have led to family disintegration.
Cde Nyoni called upon the church and traditional leaders to continue educating society on the significance of the family as a fundamental social unity created by God.
This year’s international commemorations are running under the theme: ‘Families and Inclusive Societies’, while the local theme is: ‘Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Society for Sustainable Development’.
