misihairabwi-mushonga-priscilla.jpgGovernment has underscored the need for organizations involved in humanitarian work to move away from the practice of giving out food handouts, to availing food inputs so as to empower communities they work with.

This was said by the Minister of Regional and International Cooperation, Mrs. Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga who was speaking at the World Humanitarian Day commemorations held at Unicef Children’s Home.

Minister Misihairabwi-Mushonga called for mutual accountability between the government and the humanitarian organisations, adding that since the humanitarian community wants the government to be accountable, it in turn should also be accountable.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Alain Noude`hou expressed satisfaction with the relationship between government and the donor community.

The World Humanitarian Day was set aside by the UN General Assembly following the bombing of UN offices in Iraq on the 19th of August 2003 which killed 22 people and injured many others.

Mr. Noude`hou said the commemorations will be celebrated annually starting this year.
