The Zimbabwe-Chinese Table Tennis Association this weekend held a table tennis tournament sponsored by several companies who are part of the Chinese business community in Zimbabwe.
The tournament was dubbed “Double Happiness the Belt and Road”.
The tennis extravaganza held at the majestic Longcheng Plaza in the capital attracted more than 35 top players who competed for honours and the privilege of competing in China against some of the world’s best players.
The players competed in men and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Chairman of Zimbabwe-Chinese Table Tennis Association Wang Liping said the tournament is the first of its kind in Zimbabwe and Africa which they hope to grow and get better in the coming years.
Matches were an intense affair as players went toe-to-toe, using both the conventional style and spin to outwit each other in search of glory.
Among the players who took part were women’s singles defending champion Yang Zhan, Portia Munemo and Lin Wi with Zimbabwean top table tennis players including Brian Chamboko, Tinashe Duri and Tatenda Mumvuma using the tournament to prepare for the Zone VI Championships.
The tournament not only showcased some of the best table tennis players from both countries but also strengthened bi-lateral relations, friendship, sporting exchanges and co-operation between China and Zimbabwe.
