Zimbabweans converged at various centers across the country to mark the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations this Tuesday, with thousands thronging the National Sports Stadium for the main celebrations.
At the countryâ€™s provinces, people were addressed by their respective Governors and Resident Ministers, while the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President RobertMugabe presided over the proceedings in the capital.
For the main celebrations in Harare, government officials, legislators, diplomats and some defence chiefs from Mozambique, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo were also among the dignitaries who graced the occasion.
Official proceedings to mark the day began after midmorning with President Mugabe taking the Presidential Salute.
Then it was time for the National Anthem and a flight past by the Airforce of Zimbabwe, with the senior pilots like Air Vice Marshal Sheba Shumbayaonda, Air Vice Marshal Elson Moyo, and Air Commodores; Innocent Chiganze and Jasper Marangwanda in the cockpit.
Cde Mugabe went on to inspect the parade aboard the traditional Chinese ceremonial open truck.
The parade comprised gallant sons and daughters of the soil from the two defence forces, namely the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
They showed off their marching prowess in front of their Commander-in-Chief in slow and quick march, amid cheering, whistling and ululation from the crowd.
After the Presidentâ€™s address the crowds were treated to a mixed grill of various displays by the defence forces groups.
