Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) district in Mashonaland East has come up with a programme for soccer development starting at grassroots level.

The soccer development programme which is targeting all schools in the district is a partnership between the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, UMP Rural District Council and Uzumba legislator, Cde Simbaneuta Mudarikwa.

UMP District Schools Inspector, Mr Botty Chimhanda told delegates at the launch of the programme at Nhakiwa Vocational Training Centre that the partnership will go a long way in developing talent at grassroots level.

Cde Mudarikwa, who sourced the soccer balls distributed to all the schools in the district, said it is important to identify talent at grassroots level as sport has become a career.

The schools also received volleyballs and basketballs.

Despite having a large population, UMP is one of the districts in Mashonaland East Province without organised football, with no ZIFA structures as compared to other districts like Mutoko, Goromonzi, Chikomba and Marondera which have division one teams.
