A provincial fire awareness campaign has been launched in Mashonaland Central amid calls for combined efforts in combating veld fires.
This comes as the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has started rolling out fire awareness campaigns as the fire season, which starts from the 1st of July to the 31st of October approaches.
Officially launching the fire awareness campaign at Munhenga Primary School in Muzarabani, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Advocate Martin Dinha expressed concern over the increase in veld fire incidences in the province.
Mashonaland Central Provincial Environmental Manager, Robert Rwafa appealed for deterrent punishment against violators of environmental laws.
Last year alone, at least 118200ha was destroyed by fire in Mashonaland Central Province.
The fire awareness campaign in Muzarabani was held under the theme: ‘Veldt Fire Prevention – My Responsibility.’
