Harare City Council is considering setting up an algea treatment plant at the Morton Jaffray water works as it seeks to significantly reduce dangerous toxicants that remain a menace at Lake Chivero .
Harare’s largest water source Lake Chivero is currently under severe stress from depleting water levels and unprecedented levels of pollution.
The algae menace at the water body has increased significantly further affecting auqa life.
During a tour of the Morton Jaffray water treatment plant by Local Government, Public Works and National housing Honourable July Moyo this Friday, engineers at the facility apprised their principal on how they are fighting the algae challenge and a proposal that will help to reduce and extract the algae.
Government seeks to restore efficiency at the treatment plant after a brief shutdown a few weeks ago.
Recently, government guaranteed Harare City Council’s US$868 million deal with a Chinese company for water and waste water projects.
