The Mwenezi East by elections were held today , with three candidates contesting for the member of the house of assembly  seat.

The polls opened at 7:00am this morning and closed at 7:00pm with results expected in the early hours of Sunday (tomorrow) morning .

The Mwenezi East fell vacant in December following the death of the member of the house of assembly Cde Joshua Moyo.

The people of Mwenezi took to the polls to elect a new candidate who will represent them in parliament.

ZBC News visited some polling stations which include Vilivili, Rutenga Primary School and Chatagwi.

Relatively long queues could be seen  just before the polling stations opened.

The three candidates who took part in the polls are Cde Joosby Omar of the Zanu PF party, Mr Turner Mhango who is contesting under the ticket of the Free Zimbabwe Congress and Mr Welcome Masuku of the National Consultative Assembly.

Speaking after casting his vote, Zanu PF candidate Cde Omar said he is confident of winning the elections.

Mr Masuku of the National Consultative Assembly was also oozing confidence, saying his party will win with a wide margin.

Mr Mhango was also exuding confidence that the Free Zimbabwe Congress will have a clean sweep .
