The Harare City Council has been urged to step up efforts to ensure garbage is collected on time to curb disease outbreaks.

Mbare was cited the epicentre of a typhoid outbreak last year and the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Water, Tourism and Hospitality Industry was today in the capital’s oldest suburb to assess whether the local authority is adhering to demands of keeping the area which boasts of a large vegetable market and bus terminus clean.

Chairman of the portfolio committee, Mr Wonder Mashange acknowledged the city council’s efforts but said more needs to be done.

There is consensus that refuse collection needs to be done on time while waste management best practices must be adopted.

Despite concerted efforts by the City of Harare to collect garbage, the ballooning population as well as lack of resources are stifling efforts to restore the city to its sunshine status.
