Violation of the rights of employees to a safe working environment came under spotlight at the opening of a workshop on the role of labour inspection in promoting workplace, legal and regulatory compliance in Harare today.

ARLAC Acting Director, Dr Locary Hlabanu said the four-day workshop provides rules for the peaceful conduct of collective bargaining and the creation of collective agreements.

Guest speaker at the event, Ms Hopolang Phororo, who is International Labour Organisation (ILO) Office Director in Zimbabwe and Namibia, said the decision by ARLAC to conduct this workshop demonstrates the desire of the organisation to bring to the attention of competent authorities, the violations of rights that affect the employment relationship.

The ILO estimates that annually, there are 2,3 million cases of work related deaths, 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work related illnesses worldwide.
