A Bindura man has been jailed for kidnapping a police officer and assaulting two others who had come to the rescue of their colleague.
Godfrey Mhlanga appeared at Bindura court this Monday where he was sentenced to nine months in prison by magistrate Maria Msika, a sentence which was on condition that he pays a ZWL$1 000 fine.
An additional 5 months were wholly suspended on condition that he will not resist arrest in the next 5 years.
Prosecutor Edward Katsvairo told the court that on the 13th of September, Mhlanga who was driving a Mazda pickup truck, registration number AAD 3643, was stopped by a police officer, Joseph Paribendipo at a roadblock in Bindura and asked to produce a driver’s license which he failed to produce.
The police officer embarked on the back of the truck and ordered Mhlanga to drive to the police station but instead he drove in the opposite direction, threatening to go and assault the policeman.
Other police officers, Assistant Inspector Mubaiwa and Constable Makuwasa pursued Mhlanga using a CMED vehicle and blocked him but Mhlanga pulled over the vehicle and ran away into a nearby bush, with the police chasing him.
The trio subsequently caught the fleeing motorist but he resisted arrest, breaking the handcuffs in the process.
The three officers later managed to subdue and arrest him.
