Lily Blue ridden by Mathew Thackery beat stiff competition from three other horses to win the Commander Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA)Charities Horse Race at Borrowdale Race Course in Harare this Saturday.

The charities horse race continues to grow in leaps and bounds and this year had 7 races on the table at the Borrowdale Race Course.

After having won the last race, Lily Blue, continued with its winning trajectory and this time shrugging off competition from three other horses to cross the finishing line first at the 22nd edition of the charities horse race.

Lily Blues’ jockey Mathew Thackery said he worked so hard of late and was looking forward to this event.

“I am very happy that I won, this is my passion and I have been rewarded for my hard work. Great thanks to my trainers and the horse’s stable,” Thackery said.

Guest of honor at the event, Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry Retired Major General Richard Ruwodo said, proceeds from the sporting events are channeled towards assisting the less-privileged.

“Let me give this event a proper perspective by providing a brief background to the ZNA’s philanthropic activities. In fulfillment of its social responsibilities, the ZAN conducts several fundraising events whose proceeds are directed at assisting the less privileged members of the societies,” he said.

The Commander ZNA Charities Horse Race which was sponsored to the tune of $ 40 000 saw the winner walking away $24 000, while the first runner up was given $8 000 with the second and third runner ups getting $5 000 and $3 000 respectively.
