The Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Criminal Investigations Department, CID, has been challenged to come up with strategies to curb murders. The call was made in Harare by the Deputy Commissioner-General responsible for Crime, Josephine Shambare, at a belated Christmas party for the department.
According to the CID, murder cases have increased at an alarming rate, with 198 cases reported last year.
Deputy Commissioner-General Shambare called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to reduce cases of murder.
She also challenged the investigating officers to thoroughly investigate cases to secure convictions on offenders.
This comes amid revelations that some cases are lost due to lack of evidence, while in some cases investigating officers have been accused of arresting suspects in order to investigate them.
The Deputy Commissioner-General reminded the police officers to be prepared for the forthcoming referendum and the constitution-making process and ensure such national events are conducted in a peaceful environment.
The Christmas party was attended by detectives from the country’s provinces and the event gave the officers an opportunity to interact as family levels.
