Bridget Zireni, the girl who made headlines when she underwent an operation to remove an 18kg mass from here stomach at Chitungwiza Hospital last year, has died.

Bridget (15) succumbed to cancer on her birthday yesterday (Sunday, 21 April 2019) morning, at her rural home under Mhete village in Murambinda, Buhera.

Speaking during his daughter’s burial in Buhera this morning, Bridget’s father, Mr Davias Zireni expressed gratitude to the Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Obediah Moyo, Mrs Mary Chiwenga and all the well-wishers who extended a helping hand during Bridget’s sickness.

Bridget was in form 2 when she developed a blotted tummy.

After her plight was publicised by the ZBC, the then Chitungwiza Central Hospital CEO, Dr Moyo offered that Bridget be operated at Chitungwiza Central Hospital for free.

Doctors removed a mass weighed 18kg on 24 May 2018.

Mrs Chiwenga also heard about the girl’s story and visited Chitungwiza Central Hospital under the banner of Musha Mukadzi and donated in cash and kind to Bridget.

After recovering from the operation, she was discharged and went home but became ill again after seven months.

She went back to Chitungwiza Central Hospital in March this year and was diagnosed with cancer which had spread.
