President Emmerson Mnangagwa says the modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post is set to improve movement of goods and people and to facilitate trade and industrialisation.

Officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Beitbridge Border Post Upgrade Project which is set to make it a one-stop border post, President Mnangagwa said the border post has for a long time required a facelift as it significantly contributes to Zimbabwe’s revenue since it is a major facilitator of movement of bulk goods in and out of the country.

“The event signals a new beginning and new Zimbabwe full of hope, a Zimbabwe open to the region and to the world to facilitate trade and industrialisation. The modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post will reduce the cost of doing business and improve the ease of doing business,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said the modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post will involve the upgrading of physical infrastructure and integrated border management systems.

“The development presents exciting times for the development of Beitbridge town. A new international airport will be constructed. Water reticulation systems will be upgraded as well and Beitbridge will become the face of Zimbabwe,” he said.

The President said the project will be complemented by the realisation of the Harare-Beitbridge-Chirundu highway as well as the Beitbridge-Bulawayo highway.

“My government is bold at making decisions for the national interests and improvement of the lives of our country’s citizens. The development represents my government’s resolve to modernise the economy,” he said.

He warned government officials who drag their feet to solicit for bribes saying his government will not tolerate corruption.

“Those who want to drag their feet in government buildings or offices must do so at their homes not at government offices. We say no to corruption,” said President Mnangagwa.

The President also said borders must be safe and secure to travellers and he urged the citizenry to shun from littering the environment as this will become a health hazard.
