hosp.jpgIn what has been described as a show of gross negligence which smacks of hidden motives by administrators at Harare Hospital, a doctors’ housing  project  officially launched by the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, President Robert Mugabe in 2008 has been neglected and lies forgotten.

Acting on a tip off from stakeholders at Harare hospital, ZBC News secretly visited the premises where evidence of serious negligence was uncovered.

Towering grass and rubbish dumps stand as witness of the gross negligence at the medical institution at the yet to be completed housing structures.

According to medical staff at Harare Hospital, nothing has been done since the launch of the housing scheme that was meant to build houses for doctors.

ZBC News was also shown bricks on site which the sources said are being stolen almost on a daily basis.

While efforts to get a comment from Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr George Vera failed after his number failed to go through, in ZBC News’ secret tour, decay was witnessed at the medical institution’s Opportunistic Infections Clinics, which also houses the children’s rehabilitation center.

ZBC News also took a glimpse at the male student nurses sitting on bricks and stones outside their residence.

The paths leading to the Tropical Diseases Unit also resembles a mini-jungle.

Claims were also raised that toilets are not working in the Japanese built Pediatric Unit, which is said to be the largest and the best in the country.

While issues of lack of money to fund operations have been cited, sources say the hospital does not necessarily require loads of money to cut grass and trees.

Zimbabwe’s health sector has been massively affected by brain drain with staff migrating to other countries in search of greener pastures.

However, efforts to improve health workers’ welfare such as the doctors’ housing projects are being frustrated by administrators’ lack of competence.
