The Child President Innocent Chikwanda says the government should seriously consider the welfare of children if they are to become genuine leaders of tomorrow.

The 26th session of the Children’s Parliament, is a programme of the Zimbabwe Youth Council.

Speaking during the official opening of this year’s session of Junior Parliament which coincides with the commemoration of the Day of the African Child at the City Sports Centre in Harare today, Chikwanda said the future of Zimbabwe lies in the hands of today’s children hence their education and welfare should be a priority.

Other junior parliamentarians bemoaned lack of support from people with relevant skills in different sectors saying their skills should be nurtured to help develop the nation.

The parliamentarians also expressed concern over sexual abuse of the girl child saying the government should put punitive measures to curb the vice.

The junior parliamentarians, however, appealed to government not to assign teachers to other government duties like the inspection of the voter’s roll saying this consumes much of their academic time especially during exams.

The 2018 theme of the Day of the African Child is, “Leave No Child Behind for Africa’s Development”.
