A 26-year-old Harare man appeared in court on Wednesday after a foiled attempt at robbing a taxi driver having had posed as a passenger.

Velton Tinashe Makufa appeared before Harare magistrate, Victoria Mashamba, facing charges of robbery and was remanded in custody to Thursday for his bail application as the State is opposed to him being granted bail.

Prosecuting, Lancelot Mutsokoti alleges that on November 3, Gift Gera parked his motor vehicle at Holly’s Night Club waiting for customers before Makufa, who was in the company of his two accomplices only identified as Piason and Tafadzwa approached and hired him to Coronation Road, Greendale, in Harare.

The trio agreed to pay US$5 as fare to get to their destination.

To the ignorance of the three amateur robbers, one Simbarashe Mushango, Gera’s employer, was sleeping in the boot of the motor vehicle when they got on-board.

Gera drove to Coronation area as directed by Makufa and it was upon arrival in Greendale that Makufa instructed Gera to stop, purporting to have arrived.

As the motor vehicle stopped, one of the gang members who was on the back seat grabbed Gera by the neck and produced a knife and instructed him to comply with their instructions.

Makufa jumped onto the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle while Piason and Tafadzwa pulled Gera to the back.

Gera resisted and started wrestling with his assailants and it was as a result of the noise emanating from the scuffle that Mashango was awakened.

Upon realising that Gera was not alone in the vehicle, Makufa’s two accomplices who are still at large, jumped out of the moving vehicle leaving him at the mercy of Gera and Mashango who effected citizens’ arrest taking him to Harare Central Police Station.
