Zvishavane District Hospital is still charging maternity user fees and withholding child birth records for mothers who haven’t settled their bills.

This came out during a fact finding mission by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women and Youth Affairs at the hospital today.

The parliamentary portfolio committee was told by the Hospital Manager that no maternity user fees are being charged on women giving birth.

This however turned out to be a different story when a meeting with people from the community revealed that the institution is still holding on to birth records for babies until their mothers settle maternity bills.

Some of those bills date back to 7 years ago, the committee was told.

This irked the committee, with the Chairperson, Hon. Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga explaining that by now all health institutions must have had conformed with a government directive to scrap off maternity user fees.

The committee also visited Mberengwa where it was told of similar challenges at the district hospital by the community.

The Women and Youth Affairs Parliamentary Portfolio Committee was on a fact finding mission to understand how contraceptives are being administered and whether hospitals are still charging maternity user fees.
