The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) held its yearly Commissioner General’s sports week where selection of teams for the upcoming Zimbabwe National Youth Games and the SADC Prisons and Correctional Services games was done.
Teams from 6 participating regions that included Ntabazinduna training depot, Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Manicaland, Midlands/Masvingo and Prison National Headquarters took part in 10 different sports codes that were on offer.
These included darts, volleyball, chess, netball, football, pool, golf, tennis, tug of war and athletics.
The games were being used to select teams to participate in the revamped Zimbabwe National Youth Games set for Matabeleland North from 17 – 27 August as well as the SADC Prisons and Correctional Services Games slated for Swaziland later in the year.
ZPCS acting national public relations officer, Superintendent Priscilla Mthembo said they are looking at fielding strong squads for both tournaments adding the games are part of the institution’s wellness programme.
Matabeleland retained their crown after a dominant performance that saw them clinch the soccer title while Manicaland were the netball champions and Mashonaland took the chess gold medal.
This year’s event was characterised by quality performances with officers fighting for the few slots for the upcoming competitions.
