The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS)’s family week has been hailed for enabling successful rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates by increasing their interaction with the society.

For many former inmates, getting out of prison is the first step in a long and difficult journey of starting afresh as they would have gone out of touch with the developments in their communities and even at family level.

For some, it will be a time to come face to face with those whom they wronged who in many instances may not have forgiven them.

Thanks to the ZPCS for introducing the family week which allows inmates interaction with the society, a move which they also believe prepares them back into the society.

At Chiredzi Prison, while many were enjoying quality moments with their families, for some it was a normal week in prison as they feel that their relatives and friends haven’t found a place in their hearts to forgive them, however life goes on.

Chiredzi Prison Chief Correctional Officer, Peter Chadira said society plays an important role in the successful rehabilitation and integration of offenders into the community.

As part of their efforts to build relations between inmates and the society, the ZPCS introduced a family week last year to allow inmates more time with their visiting relatives and friends.

This years’ edition started on Monday and ended this Sunday in all prisons around the country.
