The partnership which has been consummated by the signing of a memorandum of agreement in Harare, is expected to support the broad based empowerment concept as youths will be empowered academically and technically.

Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, said the agreement will enable the full development of the two tier system which allows attainment of academic qualifications by better performing students, while those who are not gifted academically can attain qualifications in technical fields.

“We are optimistic that this programme will enhance the full empowerment of young people in the country so that those who are technically gifted can proceed to degree level,” said Cde Kasukuwere.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Zimbabwe Open University, Dr Primrose Kurasha said as serious players in human capital development, they have decided to adopt tailor-made programmes that compliment government’s empowerment thrust.

“As a university we will definitely have critical programmes that suit the gaps identified by the Ministry.

“We fully support the empowerment agenda,”said Dr Kurasha.

Under the memorandum of agreement, the Zimbabwe Open University will provide short term skills development programme in association with the ministry which will be responsible for identifying skills gap among the youth and the university will develop suitable programmes for the enrolled students.
