The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has expressed satisfaction with the progress of its Athletics Explosion Programme, which caters for athletes between the ages of 13 and 15.

The revelation came during the 13-15 provincial athletics competition held on Saturday.

Scores of young budding athletes between the ages of 13 and 15 converged at Prince Edward School where other sporting disciplines such as soccer, hockey and rugby underwent a coaching programme.

ZOC Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Mutoya said the 13-15 Athletics Explosion Programme has received huge support particularly from schools and is making great strides.

“We are already streamlining to identify talent that will form part of our academy. We have had to do vertical integration in that we are going right down to the work that should be done by national associations but we want to collaborate with them in our effort to produce world class athletes by the year 2020 and this is the age group to work with those between 13 and 15,” he said.

The large turnout at the 13-15 provincial athletics competition justifies ZOC’s plan to take the programme to the other provinces next year, in a bid to identify children who have potential before putting them on a programme to transform them into high performance athletes.
