Drivers from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) dominated the Driver of the Year 2018 national competitions held in Mutare.
The ZNA dominated the field of 75 contestants who were out to impress the judges in the driving drills held at the Nyakamete industrial area in Mutare.
In the articulated category, ZNA’s Terrence Mapurazi took the top honours, while compatriot Brian Sigola was the best in the rigid section with Daniel Ngirazi making it an army treble in the bus category.
In the kombi category, Jealous Matsekete of Never Give Up Tours was judged to be the best.
Guest of honour at the award ceremony, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Dr Joram Gumbo called on private public partnerships to reduce road carnage as statistics show that five people are killed on the country’s roads while 38 are injured on a daily basis.
“I would want to commend the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe for designing such driver improvement programmes which will help in moulding discipline, courteous and skilled drivers. Research shows that such drivers tend to stay alert hence reducing the risk of them being involved in preventable collisions,” he said.
The Driver of the Year competitions are held annually with the winners going on to represent Zimbabwe at global competitions which will be held in Belgium later this year.
