The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) says the nationwide campaign to collect at least 5 000 units of blood ahead of the festive season is progressing well but has urged Zimbabweans to have a culture of contributing towards the blood bank.
In an effort to raise awareness on blood donations and to boost the blood bank during the month of December which has become synonymous with fatal traffic accidents, NBSZ embarked on a nationwide campaign to collect more blood. Â
NBSZ Public Relations Manager, Esther Masunda says so far over 2000 have been collected but encouraged more donors to continue contributing as blood saves lives.
Blood donor, Mr Emmanuel Munyukwi says donating blood should be a national responsibility as anyone can lose blood any time especially through accidents and might need blood transfusion.
The national blood bank usually stocks between 1500 to 2000 units, representing approximately 7 days’ supply.
The NBSZ gets 70% of blood collections from youths while adults contribute the remainder.
The campaign, which is being jointly run by the National Blood Services Zimbabwe and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has since incorporated Wendall Parson as its ambassador.
