Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda says the Zimbabwean Parliament will continue to lobby other parliaments in the SADC region, the Pan-African Parliament and the international community to ensure that an amicable and final solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is found.
Advocate Mudenda said this while briefing journalists after a meeting with the Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Taghrid Senouar at his office in Harare today.
During the meeting, the two discussed the recent declaration by US President Donald Trump that east Jerusalem be the capital of Israel.
The declaration sparked strong and widespread resentment from most members of the UN General Assembly.
The Palestinian ambassador, who was accompanied by two embassy officials, also discussed the escalating number of Palestinian refugees that now stands at 6 million and Advocate Mudenda called for more proactive action by the UN Commission for Refugees.
Advocate Mudenda said a fact finding mission should be dispatched to ascertain if both the human rights and refugee laws are being observed by the Israelis in the treatment of Palestinian refugees.
He also implored Palestinians to unite in the fight for the sovereignty of their nation and Arab League to continue engaging Israel and Palestine to find a lasting solution.
On the international stage, Advocate Mudenda called on the UN to come up with a clearly defined peace process with finality on the Palestinian question and the international community.
Ambassador Senouar said the force against Palestinians has increased in recent times.
The Palestinian issue has been raging for years and despite the passing of several resolutions by the UN, no peace has been found in that region.
