zim tennis open.jpgZimbabwean junior tennis players are enjoying a good start at the ongoing International Tennis Federation (ITF) Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Southern Africa Zonal Championships’ which started in the capital at the weekend.


Most of the Zimbabwean players were off to a good start at the tournament and as hosts, the country is fielding a strong team of 16 players, 8 players each for the Under 14 and Under 16 age groups for both boys and girls.


According to Tennis Zimbabwe Administrator, Patricia Mavhunduke, winners of the initial round robin will proceed to the knockout stage and get good seedings after the pool matches in the main tournament proper.


In matches played this Monday, Rondodzai Saurombe beat Dylan Foo Kune in a  boys 16 and Under age group, while Karen Muswere battled it out with Madagascar’s Yackinah Rahotohasy in the girls 14 and Under match.


Another Zimbabwean, Latifah Yasini squared off with Claudia Sumaia in the same age group.


The tournament will run until the 15th of January and the games are being used as qualifiers for the 34th African Junior Tennis Championships in Egypt in April.


Zimbabwe is hosting the 8 nation zonal qualifiers for the second year running.
