The biggest and richest golf tournament on the Zimbabwe calendar, the Zimbabwe Open will certainly be on this year despite earlier doubts that sponsorship challenges was threatening its staging.
The Zimbabwe Open Golf Tournament Director Mike Mahachi told the ZBC News that organisers had retained all their partners and preparations were now in place for the biggest and richest golfing tournament on the local calendar.
Mahachi said a pre-qualifying tournament would take place before the real Zim Open event set for 17th of April at the home of golf, Royal Harare Golf Club explodes.
The championship proper which has a huge field of 156 players gives local golf fans a treat as top players on the sunshine tour flock to Zimbabwe together with some from the European and Asian tour.
The tournament is usually an exciting tournament as most of the international players will be on a break.
A pro-am tournament will be held prior where pros will warm up with tournament sponsors and other executives at Royal Harare with the main championship teeing off after that.
Star attractions and past champions including Dean Burmester, Jean Hugo, Ullrich Van Der Berg, Jake Roos, Jbe Kruger and Brazilian Adilson Da Silva are all set to return to Harare as they seek another win on the sunshine tour sanctioned event with a total prize money of 1.8 million rand.
Since winning Zimbabwe’s premier golf tournament, some of the top players like Dean Burmester and Jbe Kruger went on a wonderful run on the sunshine, European and Asian tour circuits.
Sadly none of the top local pro golfers have won the tournament since its return from a 10-year hiatus.
It remains to be seen whether the local professional players will break the jinx this year.
