The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) is sending two amateur golf teams to the Region V Golf Championships set for Kitwe, Zambia.
The two teams will compete against 12 other countries including South Africa who have dominated the tournament for the past 13 years.
The annual Region Five Golf Tournament, which was previously known as the Zone VI Championships, will be held from Wednesday next week until Friday although a practice round is set for Tuesday.
The team led by Liberty Gumisa, includes young David Amm fresh from representing Zimbabwe at the All Africa Junior Champs, Never Milazi, Tonderai Masunga, Tafara Mpofu, Tatenda Muhonde, Young Rasheed Mohammed and Bekitehemba Ndlovu, while Boniface Chigorimbo is the team manager and Roger Baylis is the team coach.
ZGA Secretary General Lazarus Clever says due to proximity the association is sending two teams of four players unlike in the past when they would send just one team.
Team manger Chigorimbo is confident, adding that he expects the team to finish 2nd after South Africa despite having top players from all the country’s provinces.
Team coach Baylis says with the exposure, the amateurs were better placed to excel in future tournaments.
Team captain Gumisa says he feels honoured by the recognition to lead the team at the prestigious tournament.
The team is expected to leave for Kitwe on Sunday by road.
