Libyan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr. Taher Elmagrahi (pictured) has been expelled by the government of Zimbabwe.
The government has given the Libyan envoy 72 hours to leave the country following his open support for the Libyan rebels.
Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi told journalists in Harare that Mr. Elmagrahi was this Tuesday morning served with letters ordering him and his staff to leave Zimbabwe.
“Once you renounce the authority that gave you the letter of credence and then proceed to pledge allegiance to another authority. It means that act deprives you of your diplomatic standing,” said Cde Mumbengegwi.
Cde Mumbengegwi said Africa’s position on Libya is that dialogue remains the only solution to the crisis.
He said a high level ad hoc panel will continue negotiations with the two sides.
Last week, Mr. Elmagrahi denounced Colonel Muammar Gaddaffi and replaced the Libyan national flag at the embassy with that of the National Transitional Council.
