Government says it is still waiting for the approval of a mental health tribunal board by the Office of the President which will finalise the discharge of detained mental health patients from special institutions such as Chikurubu Psychiatric Centre and Mlondolozi in Bulawayo.
The deputy director Mental Health Services in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Mrs Dorcas Sithole told the ZBC News on the sidelines of the belated World Mental Health Day at Chikurubi Maximum Prison that they are still waiting for the approval of the mental health tribunal board by the Office of the President to seat and finalise the discharge of mental health patients.
Addressing prisons officers and inmates Deputy Commissioner General Administration Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Dr Alford Dube said they are determined to promote mental health in the institution to create a conducive working environment.
Doctors without Borders project coordinator Mr Mani Ghandan Sivarama Krishnan who organised the programme said statistics show that in every ten people four are mentally ill.
The World Mental Health Day is commemorated annually on the 10th of October.
