The ZIFA electoral process has attracted huge interest from various football stakeholders who have raised concern over candidates being barred from contesting at this year’s polls.
What was expected to be an exciting ZIFA poll has been reduced to a huge farce with stakeholders in the football fraternity labelling the whole electoral process a travesty of justice after it was recently announced that current president Phillip Chiyangwa and vice president Omega Sibanda will be elected unopposed after prospective candidates were disqualified by ZIFA’s Electoral Committee.
“In the history of Zimbabwean football I can tell you in all honesty that these are the worst elections that we have ever had primarily because if you see the number of people that have been banned and told that they are ineligible to participate its surprising. In the absence of a credible election sponsors will not come on board and sponsor a product that is born out of controversy so what I am saying is we need to revisit these elections otherwise it’s an absolute joke,” said former football administrator Chris Sambo.
Football analyst Stanley Katsande said the playing field needs to be even, thus the need for authorities such as the Sports and Recreation Commission to divert from being the perceived toothless bulldog to actively ensuring principles of sportsmanship and integrity are upheld.
“Governments should come together and try to reign in the whole footballing fraternity for behaving in such a manner it’s a very shameless thing, you find that FIFA will not say anything, CAF will not raise a finger over this and the only way to reign in those people governing football is for government to get involved,” he said.
Felton Kamambo a prospective candidate for the post of ZIFA president was disqualified from the election race together with Gift Banda who was vying for the post of vice president on alleged flows in their nomination.
Prior to the electoral process candidates such as Trevor Carelse Juul and Leslie Gwindi were elbowed out of the race after being handed with shadowy bans.
