ZIFA president, Cuthbert Dube has scored a first by becoming the first Zimbabwean to be appointed a member of the organising committee of the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The appointment of Cuthbert Dube as a member of the organising committee for the FIFA Confederations Cup is the culmination of the restructuring of the composition of the FIFA standing committees.
The appointments means the ZIFA boss will be part of the team tasked with the responsibility of formulating a template for the Confederations Cups to be held in Brazil in 2013, Russia in 2017and Qatar in 2021.
It’s the first time a Zimbabwean has been roped into the organising committee of such a big competition and Dube said he felt humbled by the appointment which he reckons is an endorsement of the pedigree of the leadership at the Zimbabwe Football Association.
“The appointment is significant in that the world body has shown confidence in our leadership. It’s an exciting time for us all,†said Dube.
The template will encompass key areas such as inspection of venues, transport, entertainment and accreditation among others.
The Confederations Cup embraces champions from the six confederations in addition to the World Cup defending champions and hosts of the next event.
It is held every four years as a dress rehearsal to the World Cup with the last tournament hosted by South Africa in 2009.
The next tournament will be hosted by Brazil in 2013, a year before the South American nation hosts the world’s biggest soccer showpiece and Dube will be part of the team entrusted with the organisation of the competition.
