The Victoria Falls Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) select side clinched the inaugural Poweride Safaris Unity Day Soccer Trophy after dismissing the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) team 2-1 in the final match.
The tournament was held on the 22nd of December at Victoria Falls Club and brought the border town residents together in celebrating Unity Day and promoting co-existence among different ethnic groups.
Two first half goals by the ZDF side were enough to guarantee them the coveted trophy.
The second half goal by the ZRP team resulted in a tense last 15 minutes as the police team launched a series of attacks in search of the equaliser which, however, would not come.
ZDF select team coach Munyaradzi Ushe was ecstatic about the victory and highlighted the team’s determination to defend the title come next year.
Poweride Safaris manager Thamsanqa Sikhosana saluted the teams for their sportsmanship saying the objective of the tournament is to promote the spirit of togetherness and unity.
The champions received prize money and a trophy courtesy of the sponsors.
In the individual category ZDF select side’s Khozani Nkomo walked away with the top goal scorer award while ZRP select team’s Ralph Simbarashe was voted the player of the tournament.
