The Zimbabwe Defence Forces Select won the 2018 ZDF trophy following a 1-nil win over their Malawian counterparts in an encounter that marked part of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations at the giant National Sports Stadium this afternoon.

A first half strike was enough to ensure the ZDF Select won the 2018 Zimbabwe Defence Forces trophy.

The ZDF Select were on the front foot from the onset and were rewarded for their enterprising play when Brighton Mugoni opened the score sheet.

ZDF Select captain Wonder Kapinda could have stretched the hosts lead but lack of composure saw the midfielder narrowly missing the target to take the encounter to the breather on a 1-nil lead for the hosts.

The Malawi Defence Forces Select side had opportunities of their own with a thumping effort thwarted by Talbert Shumba who produced an impressive save.

ZDF Select could have killed off the game as a contest but were denied by the cross bar in the 82nd minute.

The game would end in a 1-nil win for the ZDF Select side which managed to retain a crown they won last year after overcoming Highlanders 3-nil.

The two squads were crowned by Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga who is the Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, who was accompanied by Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Phillip Valerio Sibanda as well as the Commanders for the ZNA, Air Force and ZPCS.
