The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Select side claimed the 2019 ZDF trophy following a 1-0 victory over the Lesotho Defence Forces (LDF) team at the National Sports Stadium this afternoon.
ZDF Select dominated early on with some fine goalkeeping denying the hosts an opener in the 24th minute.
LDF Select held firm in the opening stanza which ended in a nil-all deadlock but when play resumed in the second half the ZDF select side surged ahead courtesy of a Philip Marufu near post header.
The Zimbabwean team could have doubled the lead only to be denied by the upright.
Despite attempts by the visitors to restore parity, Marufu’s goal proved the difference as Zimbabwe landed the 2019 crown much to the satisfaction of the ZDF Select head coach Rodwell Dhlakama.
“I am pleased with the result,i am happy that we have managed to lift the trophy as we cap of the defence forces celebrations in style,” Dhlakama said.
Dhlakama’s counterpart was disappointed with the loss but spoke on the importance off the game in the building solid relations between Zimbabwe and Lesotho.
There was excitement when ZDF Select were handed their silverware, capping off the 2019 Defence Forces Day celebrations held at the National Sports Stadium.
