The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) has committed to continue assisting communities in need in line with its mandate during peace time.
The ZDF) made the commitment at the handover of a classroom block at Soma Secondary School in Shamva to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education as part of the ZDF community assistance month.
In a speech read on his behalf by Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander of Artillery Brigade, Brigadier Stanley General Mangena, ZDF Commander, General Philip Valerio Sibanda said the force has a duty to provide assistance to civil authorities and communities when required.
“There are other subsidiary duties that include rendering military assistance to civil power to civil authorities and to civil communities, among others. It is now in the procedural ZDF calendar that community assistance projects are commissioned in August each year,” he said.
Mashonaland Central Provincial Administrator, Mr Cosmas Chiringa commended the ZDF for undertaking several development projects in the province.
“It is not only here in Shamva where they are assisting the community but all over the province,” said Mr Chiringa.
Parents and school children expressed optimism that school performance will increase since their classrooms are now conducive for learning.
Soma Secondary School started in 2002, operating in barns and other structures meant for farming activities.
The school now has 144 students in forms 1 to 4 and five teachers.
