seed.jpgThe Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) has set up an inputs credit facility dedicated to the forthcoming summer cropping season in order to encourage early preparations this year.

The credit facility for the 2011/2012 summer cropping season is targeting to supply salaried workers with inputs enough to cover a maximum of 5 hectares per farmer.

The facility is open to all farmers, even non-members and beneficiaries will be able to pay in installments for a period of three to five months.

ZCFU Chief Economist and Head of Commodities, Mr Peter Gambara said the initiative seeks to lessen the burden facing workers in acquiring inputs due to low salaries while promoting early planting.

“Anyone can access these inputs as long as their employer is prepared to place a stop order facility because we have realised that if we use banks, people can change banks. We are calling upon all sectors, government, private sector and individuals to begin preparations for the summer cropping season, which is just three months away,” Mr Gambara said.

The ZCFU has engaged seed houses and fertilizers manufacturers to make sure the inputs will be distributed at designated centers throughout the country’s provinces.

Late preparations by farmers, government and the private sector have always hampered the success of the local summer cropping season as farmers access inputs late and miss out on the early rains.
