The Zimbabwe Chess Federation will wind the year by staging another explosive chess tournament which will see local chess players fighting hard to break the four year jinx of dominance by foreign chess players.

Current national champion Zhemba Jemuse and ladies favourite Tatenda Zengeni are expected to pose a threat to foreigners in the Zimbabwe Open Tournament that roars into life from the 30th of December to the 1st of January at Causeway Building in the capital, Harare.

Upcoming chess players Woman Candidate Master Rumbidzai Mawire and Refiloe Mudodo are also expected to carry the day for Zimbabwe in a tournament that features man, ladies and junior players.

ZCF chief arbiter Simbarashe Murimi said local players are raring to break the four year jinx that has seen them play second fiddle to foreigners.

Zambia, South Africa, Botswana and Malawi are some of the countries to compete at the annual chess showdown.

Zambia has won the tournament four times on the trot.
