Livestock farmers are set to benefit from a special goat breeding programme being spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS) to revive small stocks and create wealth for the rural community.

The country’s goat production which has dwindled over the years is set for a boom following the launch of a special goat programme by ZAS.

The society’s chief executive told the ZBC News on the sidelines of the goat stakeholders’ conference in Harare that the organisation will provide training to equip farmers with best goat breeding practices to enable them to unlock value from their small stocks.

Farmers welcomed the goat commercialisation programme saying if the agric-society open markets for them, this will boost their income generation as compared to keeping small stocks for family consumption only.

The country has over two million goats but most farmers are struggling to get the real value for their stocks as they are forced to sell them at give away price owing to poor quality and lack of reliable markets.
