The HIV and AIDS pandemic has claimed lots of lives the world over with Zimbabwe and the Sub-Saharan African region in general being the hardest hit. Zimbabwean youths who constitute a big percentage of the country’s population have been affected and are at a great risk of being infected due to ignorance.

Many are getting infected due to the fact that there is a widespread belief that if one engages  sexually with a virgin then they do not get infected.

It is against this background that a youth AIDS festival was organized to sensitise the youth on the effects of the pandemic. Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment Minister,  Cde Savior Kasukuwere advised the youth to desist from engaging in sexual activity.

Child President , Nigel Gwanzura also emphasized the need for the youth to abstain and actively participate in government programmes which are aimed at raising awareness on HIV and AIDS issues.

Zimbabwe Youth Council Director , Mr. Livingstone Dzikira said the young generation is at a risk of contracting the disease and they have lined up a number of programmes to raise awareness.

Zimbabwe has however made remarkable achievements in the reduction of HIV prevalence from over 30 % to the current rate of 13.7%, and this has been attributed to awareness campaigns and behavioral change among Zimbabweans.
