nandos logo.jpgYouth groups and student representatives have expressed displeasure at the negative portrayal of the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe in an advert that is being run by a fast food outlet on SABC channel.

In interviews around the city of Harare, youth representatives said the advert is in bad taste and should be stopped immediately and that Nando’s should apologise.

Zanu PF Youth President, Jim Kunaka and Upfumi Kuvadiki representatives said the South Africa-based company risks being boycotted locally if they continue to show disrespect for a constitutionally elected leader.

Local businessman, Ray Kaukonde exonerated the company locally but said the advert, which also features former Libyan leader, Colonel Muamar Gaddafi, is in total disregard for our traditional values.

Cde Kaukonde also said the advert is in violation of business ethics.

Meanwhile, Nandos Zimbabwe, a subsidiary of Innscor Africa Limited, has distanced itself from the advert generated by Nando’s South Africa.

In a statement, Corporate Affairs Executive, Musekiwa Kumbula said Nandos Zimbabwe is a franchise from Nandos International and operates as an autonomous entity which generates its own marketing strategies.

Mr Kumbula said the Nandos S.A advertisement, which denigrates the person of President Robert Mugabe, was generated in South Africa, by Nandos South Africa.

He said Nandos Zimbabwe feels the advert is insensitive and in poor taste.

Mr Kumbula also said no consultation takes place between the different franchisees when they are formulating and executing marketing strategies for their respective markets.
