ximex mall 02.11.10 edit.jpgNational Social Security Authority (NSSA) says it will evict tenants who are currently occupying Ximex Mall in Harare to pave way for refurbishment.

NSSA has in the past unsuccessfully attempted to close the building, but tenants resisted notices to vacate the premises by June 30 this year.

NSSA General Manager, Mr James Matiza, said plans to refurbish the mall are already in place, a development he said will curb multiple sub-letting and bring sanity to the complex which is too congested.

Mr Matiza further noted that the refurbishment is in line with NSSA’s policy and other demands to enable it to compete with other buildings for business.

Ximex Mall has become a haven of illicit deals and vices such as prostitution, theft and drug dealing.

Meanwhile, tenants at the mall say they will resist the intended eviction as NSSA is planning to replace them with foreigners.

“We are going nowhere, NSSA wants to evict us under the pretext of wanting to refurbish the place but in actual fact intending to replace us with foreigners,” said one tenant.

NSSA closed the second floor of the building four years ago but currently, there are no signs of refurbishment taking place  and this has led tenants to believe that evictions notices are just a scapegoat for a sinister motive.
