Women’s University in Africa (WUA) supported by other stakeholders went on a cleanup exercise at Chikurubi Maximum Prisons in an effort to rid it of diseases breathing garbage ahead of the rain season.

With the main aim of keeping Chikurubi Maximum Prison clean, WUA, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS), Econet Zimbabwe, EMA and inmates went on a cleanup exercise of the prison.

Students and lecturers from the WUA said this is just but a beginning to other initiatives they are going to carry out around the capital city.

Inmates’ representative Bruce Mazhura said the clean up exercise will help preventing the breathing of diseases associated with dirty. 

Assistant Commissioner responsible for Chikurubi Complex ZPCS Norbert Chomurenga said the clean up exercise is commendable as it also plays a critical part in the rehabilitation of inmates.

Cleaning up of the environment is important as it will go a long way in fighting the spread of diseases such as typhoid and diarrhoea among others.
