Women councilors in Marondera Rural District Council say while the working environment has improved in the male dominated area, a lot still needs to be done to increase women representation at local government level.

Ward 23 councilor, Mrs Letwin Kanengoni said although she receives enough support from her male counterparts, its time women participation is increased at all levels.

Ward 2 councilor, Mrs Taurai Chikukwa said empowerment coupled with capacity building is key to improving women participation and representation at decision making levels.

Marondera RDC only has two women councilors out of 23 wards, while Mashonaland East province has only one woman CEO of a local authority and one women council chairperson out of a total of nine local authorities.

At parliament level, there are only three women parliamentarians out of the 23 constituencies in the province.

According to the Zimbabwe SADC Gender Protocol Barometer for 2015, women participation at local governance level decreased from 19 percent to 16 percent after the 2013 general elections.
