Vice President Retired General Constantino Chiwenga has eulogised the late late Gogo Yowani Kubvuruno as a heroine who gave the country a dedicated, selfless and fearless soldier in the mould of the Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda.
Addressing thousands of people from all walks of life during the burial of General Sibanda’s mother at Dera Mushayamvura village in Gokwe, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said people should not mourn but celebrate and emulate a life well lived.
He said General Sibanda is a brave soldier who has contributed immensely to the peace and stability not only of the country but the region as a whole.
“While many have told their own versions of Operation Restore Legacy, I want to tell you this. General Sibanda was the man who arranged a safe passage for President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he was fired from government last year. His desire for peace and stability in the country is evident in his role in leading the Operation Restore Legacy and stressing upon peace,” said Vice President Chiwenga.
The Vice President also narrated the role that General Sibanda played in bringing warring parties in Mozambique to the negotiating table and his critical contribution in the Angolan civil war.
Known in military circles as Mr Perfect, General Sibanda is a respected army general known for his unwavering stance on safeguarding goals of freedom, democracy, peace and unity.
He encouraged relatives and friends to emulate the late Gogo Kubvuruno who always preached peace and unity within the family, adding that the country can draw lessons from her life.
Distraught relatives and friends said the death of Gogo Kubvuruno is a huge loss to the family.
Gogo Kubvuruno died on Friday in Gokwe Mapfungautsi after a short illness.
She was 98.
She was born in Shurugwi where they were later forcibly removed by the Rhodesian government to the then dry and tsetse invested area of Gokwe.
She survived by six children and several grand children and great grand children.
