Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially opened the First Session of Conference of State Parties to the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa, otherwise known as the Kampala Convention.
The conference is underway at a local hotel.
Cde Mnangagwa said in 2015 alone, conflict, violence and rapid onset disasters caused 3.5 million new displacements on the continent.
“Africa must be commended for being the first continent to come up with human rights instruments which comprehensively the human rights challenges faced by internally displaced persons,” he said.
