Zanu PF has warned the electorate against voting for MDC-T councillors in the anticipated harmonised elections as they have destroyed most urban local authorities through looting council resources for personal aggrandisement.
Speaking after the District Coordinating Committee meeting in Chitungwiza, Zanu PF Secretary for Lands, who is also Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister, Dr Ignatius Chombo said government will not hesitate to fire councillors and council officials found guilty of corruption or abuse of resources as it seeks to protect the electorate.
Cde Chombo said: “We have had to intervene in most areas to save local authorities from collapse.
“Chitungwiza’s whole system was corrupt to the core so we had to set up a resuscitation team. The levels of corruption in these local authorities are alarmingâ€
Zanu PF Politburo Member, Cde Tendai Savanhu said reports indicate that most MDC-T led local authorities are not prioritising service delivery and the electorate should draw lessons from the mistakes made in the 2008 harmonised elections.
“The mistakes made by our people in 2008 are there for all to see,” said Cde Savanhu.
He added: “The local authorities especially Harare and Chitungwiza are dominated by MDC-T and the service delivery has collapsed.
“We have received reports about a resuscitation team put in place by government to save the people from these unruly characters.â€
Meanwhile, analysts say in future, it would be prudent for political parties to set acceptable criteria for candidates contesting to become councillors as it has emerged that every council that is dominated by the young and immature councillors is facing various challenges of mismanagement and corruption.
