The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development has expressed satisfaction with the positive impact that the upgraded Victoria Falls International Airport is making to the tourism industry and is convinced that targeted 1.5 million passengers per annum is attainable.
Seven months after the launch of the US$150 million new-look Victoria Falls International Airport, members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development toured the facility to assess progress in the utilisation with a view to come up recommendations on how best to make maximize the asset.
Since the commissioning of the upgraded airport which has been dubbed the game changer, more airlines from around the globe have returned to the destination while tourists’ arrivals have also improved.
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development, Cde Dexter Nduna expressed satisfaction with the perfect state of the asset and the impact it is making to the tourism industry.
Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe director airports, Mr Tawanda Gusha told the legislators that the national asset remains intact and highlighted the ongoing efforts to aggressively market the facility so as to lure more airlines.
During the visit the legislators toured both the new international and domestic terminals, the control tower and the fire station.
Passenger statistics for Victoria Falls Airport shows a steady rebound with a total of 309 000 recorded for 2016 while expectations are that by 2018 the figure will surge to 400 000.
