The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) says veld fires have sharply decreased due to continuous monitoring and management of runaway fires and awareness campaigns since the beginning of the fire season which started on the 31st of July 2018.

In a statement, EMA communications officer Mrs Joyce Chapungu said during the period between the 31st of July and the 31st of October each year veld fires are high due to conducive environment which includes availability of dry flammable material during the dry and sometimes windy period.

She, however, said since the 31st of July 2018 a total of 1 249 fire incidences destroyed 643 482.01 hectares of land translating to a decline of 21.1 percent compared to the same period last year when 1 710 fire incidences destroyed 815 096 hectares of land.

According to the agency, veld fires have claimed three lives in Zvimba, Gokwe and Goromonzi this year while four lives were lost in 2017 between the same period.
